About Gostyń

GOSTYŃ – URBAN-RURAL GMINA1 – 137 km2 in area; population of ≈27,000 (of which ≈19,000 urban); 21 village administrator’s offices2.

Gostyń (pron. 'goss–tin) is both the centre of the local economy and the place where gmina and powiat authorities have their offices. The head of the gmina local government is Mayor Jerzy Kulak and his two Deputy Mayors: Grzegorz Skorupski and Maciej Czajka.

The town, crossed by the River Kania, is surrounded by picturesque hills, forests, and meadows. Gostyń’s most important landmarks include: a Baroque monastery complex of the Confederation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri (the building has the title of a Historic Monument in the Polish List of Historic Monuments), the parish church of St Margaret (Gostyń’s oldest building), the church of the Holy Spirit, the town hall, and a palace in the village of Gola.

The main part of the local economy is the agri-food industry. Gostyń has a number of large factories that specialise in the production of sugar, dairy produce, filters for the automotive industry, glass and cardboard packaging, just to name a few. Of special prominence is also Gostyń’s craftsmanship – the locally-produced britzkas are of great renown both in Poland and abroad.

Gmina Gostyń has been undergoing a significant transformation over the past couple of years. The rapidly growing local economy, a well-balanced budget and numerous investments render Gostyń a place worth living, working and investing in. An especially extraordinary thing that sets Gostyń apart from many other gminas is that Gostyń’s local government has no debt. Having conscientiously executed its financial plan for the past six years, Gostyń has entirely paid off its financial obligations. No loans have been taken since 2021, and the last loan instalment was paid on February 29, 2024. In comparison with other cities of similar size in the area, taxes in Gostyń are among the lowest, which is beneficial for both the residents and investors.

Gostyń has always played a crucial part in the road network of the region. An important milestone was reached in 2023, when the North-South bypass was opened to traffic. The bypass has significantly reduced the amount of through traffic in the city centre. Currently underway is the construction of the second, East-West bypass, which is going to be part of the national road 12. The investment amounts to 250 million PLN and is due for completion in 2025. Owing to the commitment of the municipality, 2028 will witness the reactivation of passenger rail services. Bringing the services back to Gostyń will not only create new public transport possibilities for the residents, but it is also going to coincide with the 750th anniversary of Gostyń’s establishment.

Gostyń prioritises eco-friendliness and the development of green spaces. The town’s “Green Order” (Zielony Ład) programme, which is backed by a budget of 18 million PLN (of which 14 million comes from the national government subsidy), is going to lead to the revitalisation of 7 recreational areas, including the town park next to Strzelecka Street, and the Holy Mountain Promenade. It is Gostyń’s priority to create new places for leisure such as the urban orchard, in which 160 trees have been planted. The programme is as much about recreational areas as it is about the innovative development of the urban area.

Gostyń is a forward-looking gmina with great potential. The stability of its finances, the dynamic development of the local infrastructure, and care for the environment bear witness to Gostyń’s modernity and friendliness.
